I Know... It's been awhile!

Yeah, yeah, I think I have been neglecting this poor blog... and my crafting lately. I have finished a monkey recently that will be put on Etsy... eventually... and I recently finished my first... imperfect... granny square baby blanket. Don't get me wrong, I've been crafting this whole time, I've just been neglecting this blog a bit.

Any way... I recently purchased an electronic copy of Interweave Knits Accessories from 2009 on a blow out sale (Only .10!) and I came across this wonderful article at the end that perfectly sums up my feelings about knitting, crochet, and crafting in general. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by passing this article along, as I have the author and source listed here, but someone please let me know if I should take this down so as to not make anyone upset.

Knitting Gives Me More Than Socks
JENNIFER NASTU

I went to a business seminar recently and brought along my knitting. When the speaker began, I got to work. The harder I listened, absorbing new ideas, the faster my hands worked on my sock.

That afternoon, with my finished sock nestled in my new knitting bag and my hands—without knitting to keep them busy—restlessly doodling, the speaker made a remark that made my head snap up.

She was speaking about a woman who had been on her board of directors. “She never listened,” said our speaker. “She came to board meetings with her knitting and knitted the whole meeting long.” My cheeks burned. I felt thankful that my socks were safely tucked away. Later, I apologized to the speaker for seeming rude.

“Oh, don’t worry about it,” she said. “You didn’t knit for that long.”

“That’s not the point,” I said. I tried to explain that my brain works better when my hands are busy, but she had gone on to someone else.

She didn’t understand. But then again, I thought, a few years ago I myself wouldn’t have understood. Though I’ve always kept my hands busy while my brain works—mostly doodling—I never thought about the brain-hand connection until I started knitting.

I haven’t been knitting long. My first project, done just over two years ago, was a pair of midnight blue chenille mittens. I was so obsessed that I worked on them in the car at stoplights. Never mind that somehow I increased the number of stitches so that when the mittens were finished I had to keep my hands fisted to keep the mittens from falling off. Never mind that cotton chenille isn’t very warm and my hands froze. It didn’t matter—they were beautiful.

My next projects were hats—many, many hats. I wrote stories in my head while I knitted—around and around until I had enough hats to keep the heads of all my family members warm. My father-in-law, a
gruff old softie who’d give me the moon if he could, cried when I gave him his hat—as though I’d given the stars in return.

Then I tried a sweater, made from rug cotton on size eleven needles. The bulky yarn reminded me of fall, and I thought of breezy days in college, remembered a friend I hadn’t thought of in years, composed a letter I’d write down later. The sweater looks, perhaps predictably, like a bathmat. I’ve never worn it but can’t throw it away. I’m hoping I’ll get a puppy soon: the sweater would make a perfect dog bed.

After that I bought a silk/cashmere blend in soft pink and knitted myself a shawl. It took months to finish, and as I worked I thought of the type of person I’d be when I wore it: tall and willowy, confident and feminine. I felt a keen sense of loss when I finally finished. Now what would I knit?

Four black hats (escapist knitting); a cotton vest in shades of pink and baby blue (reluctant knitting: “I’ll never finish this, and I’m not sure I want to”); dozens of Christmas presents (panic knitting: “If I make something for Mom then I have to make something for Dad and it’s Christmas Eve”); a Fair Isle sweater (challenging knitting: “Will I ever get the hang of this?”); staff projects for the magazine (deadline knitting). Some projects haven’t worked out; they sit tangled and sad in the bottom of my knitting basket. These are difficult to bear, and I cringe when I come upon them, feeling like a neglectful mother.

And then there are dry spells, and they are each different, as well. There’s the “I don’t have any ideas” spell, the “I don’t have any good yarn” spell (despite the overflowing state of my yarn cabinet) and, of course, the “there are too many things to knit in the world and I can’t knit all of them so I won’t knit anything” spell. This last is the most painful: I am like a sullen teenager again, refusing the beauties of the world if I can’t have them all. It’s the one that causes my heart to race and my hands to sweat whenever I see something being knitted. I want to run to the yarn store and spend enough money to give my household a heart attack, yet I hold myself back, pretending to be aloof. When this happens, I ease back into knitting with a simple hat, which always gets my mind on track again, percolating happily as my hands keep busy.

I know better. It’s not mindless, not a distraction. In fact it’s just the opposite: an attraction, one between my hands and my brain. I make no brilliant leaps when I’m knitting. I haven’t solved the problem of world hunger or cured cancer or balanced my finances. Instead I wonder and daydream. I have ideas. I create.

Jennifer Nastu learned to knit thanks to her friends here at Interweave. She wholeheartedly blames them for the current state of her addiction.

Wow, this seriously does sum up my feelings about crafting. I knit at my work meetings, and I always feel a mixture of awe at what I am creating, annoyance because they claim I distract them, or disbelief that I am really paying attention, when really I am doing to to stay focused and not fall asleep during the meetings. Doodling doesn't do it for me, I need to keep my hands and some portion of my mind busy so I can attend to the two hours of meeting 'boring-ness.'

I hope to add a few more things to this blog in the near future. Don't give up on me!

It's almost the end of January!

This last week has been pretty good for me. My husband was finally offered a job at my program so he will no longer get beaten up at work. I decided to try and start spinning my own yarn, which turned out pretty well for my first time. I am also on track for finishing my current custom order, which is great, I am almost done with Mini Monkey #3 and by next week I should be about half way done with a Big Monkey. I also discovered another awesome yarn shop in Portland and I found an authentic Korean grocery store where I was able to find some of my favorite Korean foods that I haven’t had since I left Korea.

My first attempt at spinning my own yarn using a homemade drop spindle:

Wool

Parts for the spindle

Finished Spindle

Its Yarn!

Knit up yarn

With a Crochet Border

Finished Product

The finished yarn wasn't perfect, but I think it was good for a first try. I think I'm hooked. Now I want a proper spindle, some dyes and bags of roving.

Food I’ve made:

I made these wings for the recent Oregon Ducks game and they weren’t spicy, but they were delicious! I believe I posted the recipe last week.

Slacker Post

I was such a slacker this week. I took no pictures, I didn’t cook much, and I’ve just been generally lazy. Next week should be so much better. To make up for some of my slacking I am including a link for the Sports Wings recipe I talk about below. They are delicious!

Monkeys:

I am finished with two of my three mini monkeys for my recent custom order. I have one large monkey to complete along with that third mini monkey in the upcoming weeks. I have come up with some great ideas for some future monkeys, but for now I have to focus on completing my custom orders.

Food:

Well, this last week I have been kind of slacking on cooking but I did make some pretty fantastic Sports Wings for the Duck Game last week. They are not spicy, but they are fantastic! I am expecting some more good (and healthy) cooking to occur on this upcoming week.

Health and Fitness:

Not much change this last week, but we are going grocery shopping tomorrow and stocking up on healthy food.

Monkey Madness and General Update

Ok, I am back! Get ready for a long post! I have officially added a reminder build into my internet browser (which I am on at least one time a day) reminding me that I MUST blog every week. This will help me get back into the habit, practice my writing, and also help with promotion of my knitting and crafts. I will also use this blog to talk about delicious foods that I have recently made as well as to talk about health and fitness, which I have been quite lax on in the last year.

Monkeys:

For me, my knitting and crafts will be the highlight of this blog. By May of 2010 I had been spending a few years playing with many different kinds of crafts; knitting, crochet, Jewelry making, scrap booking, weaving, beading, sewing, cake decorating, and probably a few other things as well. I soon learned that a few of these crafts really required that I take a class, which really wasn’t in my budget both money and time wise. I had taught myself to crochet and a little bit of knitting when I worked in one of my mindless call center jobs (pre-paid cell phone minute sales… boring!) and I had been both crocheting and knitting scarves and baby blankets with simple stitches – without patterns. And then I took a hiatus from needle crafts.

While in South Korea a friend of mine became pregnant and I really wanted to make a gift from the heart for her baby. I found a yarn store after much searching, found some soft baby yarn, a pattern, a pair of needles, and knit her probably my best work by that point. The blanket was a hit and I didn’t knit much more for awhile, but I think I was hooked to knitting people things at that point.

I took another long hiatus after coming back from Korea, knitting maybe a scarf or two, but otherwise not touching my needles. This is when I was trying jewelry making.

Suddenly, in May 2010, I realized that my niece, Lily, was about to turn one and I hadn’t knit her anything yet. I thought of making her a blanket, but I debated because what does a one year old need with a baby blanket? She needed a toy! While surveying a craft store for baby yarns and wondering what I should do, and only 2 weeks to go before the birthday party, my eye caught sight on a Paton’s Sock Monkey pattern book. I decided that even though I had never knit a toy before, didn’t know how to knit in the round, or anything, I would give it a try. If I failed I would just go to the store and find an age-appropriate loud toy, since that is an aunt’s prerogative, to annoy the parents with singing toys. Right?

Well, I did not need to go buy that obnoxious toy for Lily because my first attempt at the sock monkey worked. It was fantastic, and she loved it. Two weeks after this, I was due to visit the before mentioned friends from Korea in Canada, and I wanted to bring their baby a present as we were bringing presents from Oregon to the parents.  I spent the next week wondering what I should do again, and decided that, well I should just make a monkey again! One week later, and knitting like crazy most of the trip up, I had a completed monkey for my friend’s baby!

And so, almost an obsession and an Etsy store was started. I still use Paton’s patterns, but I also have my own patterns that I have created. Mini monkeys are the most popular so far, but I have also designed a ‘Soctopus” a cute little Octopus knit much like the sock monkeys.
My store is slowly getting looked at and I am beginning to make sales. I am excited to finish some custom orders and them make some more items for the store in the future. Some ideas I have had:

~ More Soctopuses or Soctopi?
~Bigger Monkeys
~Monkeys that resemble popular characters
~ Furry Monkeys
~ Other little creatures
~ Scarves
~Legwarmers

 Some completed Monkeys (And Other):

Baby Safe Mini Monkey
My first Mini Monkey with non-embroidered eyes, I have since found safety eyes that look better.

Mini Monkey ordered for a friend's child. Safety Eyes and Mohawk.

Socktopus!

Headband

Punk Rock Monkey made as a present for my room mate's birthday.

~ Stuffed Turban Squash

This is not all of the treats I have made since the last blog, but these are some of the highlights. I have most of the recipes if anyone is interested in any of them though.

Health and Fitness:

Well, unfortunately there is not that much to report on here. I have been a huge slacker the last year. I can use whatever excuse I want, but I have gained back all of the weight I lost before going to Korea and the weight I continued to lose while there. I am currently looking at some options, like starting the South Beach diet with a friend of mine, but I am not sure. I’ve never 100% bought into fad diets and paying for diet plans. I also hate that the “healthy foods” they want you to eat always seem to be $8.00 a pound salmon fillets served with some other expensive side. I’m thinking about trying it or a month or so though so that that will get me going and then customize it to the weight watchers/mix diet I was doing last time.

The hard thing for me though is getting started and keeping myself accountable. Last time I had Cody, Fallon, and Adam all on my butt asking when we were going to the gym, giving each other low-cost food ideas, and generally supporting each other. I think Fallon was especially pivotal to me making the change because she was an almost daily visual focus to make the change. After leaving Korea, it seems like the support all went away and with the stress of everything going on in the last year, I just got lost. I need to learn to depend on myself for that support, but I am not sure how to do that yet. All I know is that I hate getting my picture taken again because when I look at them I look horrible. Hopefully this blog will help me get started. I am already trying to make a few small changes to my routine:

1.      Drinking more water again - This has been a challenge. My job requires a lot of driving and being with kids that I often cannot just run to the restroom. I have been limiting my water intake because of this. I also didn’t use my ‘bit and suck’ Camelbak for too long because of this and I think I need a new top for it…
2.      Remembering to substitute tea for coffee more often – I don’t care much for plain coffee and during the holidays my weakness at least 3x a week has been a Venti Caramel Brule Frappuccino from Starbucks. Ouch - that is calories galore! I love tea and so I am trying to remind myself that not only do I like it, it is so much healthier for me and it helps me drink that water that I need! I can’t even use the caffeine excuse because one of my favorite teas is Green and that has a fairly large caffeine helping.
3.      Trying not to have a snack with every one of my clients – Again his one is so hard, especially when I often forget to have a regular lunch. They have a cracker pack or gummy fruit snack and I am tempted to have one too. I do set limits on what kinds of snacks the kids can have, I try to buy snacks without high fructose corn syrup and low sugar contents, but those things do end up in the snack box in my car.

Well, not a lot of changes, and they are not perfect yet, but that’s where I am.

Alright! That's it for now, my next post should be a little bit shorter!

Ok, lets try this again!

Ok, I am officially going to try to restart blogging. This is mostly to promote my Etsy Site, but it's also to write about my cooking and life and such and keep up my writing. I recently added a reminder application to my internet browser to remind me to keep up on knitting projects and bills and I have officially added one to remind me to blog each Friday. So, starting this Friday I will write a blog to catch up on what I have missed writing about and from then on I will plan on writing a weekly update. I am so excited and hopefully this will cause people to order more of my knitting and other craft projects!
